Pablo Neruda is one of the most influential people around the world. He was a Chilean politician and a poet. His work are still celebrated through out the world. He became a well known poet by the age 13. He became a senator for Chilean Communist Party later he was a advisor of Chile's socialist President Salvador Allende. His most famous poem is, "Tonight I Can Write the Saddest Lines". He won his Nobel Prize in literature in 1971.
However, in his memoir he has admitted of raping a maid in Ceylon. According to his memoir, the girl refused his advances but he took a strong grip on her waist and led her to his bedroom. She had her eyes wide open and remained unresponsive. And he was well aware of her despising him.
Now that been said, his legacy doesn't seem so black and white. Even though this memoir has been published 20 years ago. People are finally calling Neruda out. After a new rise in women rights Campaign, people are starting to question Neruda and rape culture.
It's so obvious that people feel disgusted by his actions but they can't dismiss his writing. His work and his ugly side will forever be known.
